WHY WAS PEACOCK FISH INTRODUCED IN FLORIDA?

The Florida Peacock Fish (Cichla ocellaris) was introduced into south Florida waters as a need to control the overpopulation of nonnative species which made themselves at home in the Florida canals, ponds, freshwater lakes. In particular, there was one fish by the name of the spotted tilapia ( Tilapia mariae ) which started thriving after being with the aid of aquarium owners releasing older larger undesirable specimens. The biologist at Florida fish and wildlife conservation commission had a problem to tackle because the spotted tilapia became so invasive that it by the early 1980's it was reviling stocks of even the native fish species in Florida. The FWC had to find a method on how they could fix the issue at hand.
